WHO I AM:
Welcome! Oomingmak Racing is a "recreational racing" sled dog kennel located in Grand Marais, MN, on the north shore of Lake Superior. There are usually around 20 alaskan huskies in the yard, some of which are retired dogs that no longer race. I run the longer (200+ mile) races that are run in the lower 48 states. My primary focus has been the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon, considered by many to be the toughest race outside of Alaska. We may very well have the smallest pool of dogs in this race. This past year, I trained 14 dogs. I work full-time as a carpenter for Nace Hagemann Construction, Inc., in Grand Marais.
"Oomingmak" is a word native Alaskans use for muskox, meaning "the bearded one". I have had a beard since 1993, and have no intention of changing that anytime soon!

CURRENT VIDEO
I was really hoping to change this video more frequently! Here are the "Doctors" out on a sled run. They are almost 8 months old. They have done 6 or so runs in their entire lives. The 2 lead dogs are Cheddar and Curds. The pups have a lot to learn....don't run in to your partner, no growling, etc. Even at such a young age, though, they are doing fantastic! Watch in particular the tug lines (the rope that attaches to the harness). If that line is tight, the dog is pulling. These pups all pull! Now that the Beargrease is behind us, it is time to work on next years team.
